Gastric sleeve or sleeve gastrectomy is one of the three main types of weight-loss procedures, where the stomach is reduced to become approximately 15% of its initial size.
Sleeve surgery is becoming more and more popular and makes up around 40% of all conducted bariatric surgeries.
It is quite a simple procedure with low rates of complications. On the day of the procedure, you will need to arrive at the hospital before the scheduled surgery time. Usually surgery is conducted in the morning, but everything depends on the surgeon’s schedule and hospital rules.
Remember, that you are not allowed to eat anything the night before. Many operations are cancelled because patients neglect these simple rules. If you vomit during the surgery, there is the possibility of pulmonary aspiration, which can lead to pneumonia or worse. Another reason for cancelling the surgery might be gum or tobacco chewing, or taking medications, which were not previously allowed by the doctor.
After the surgery you will be taken back to your room and within a couple of hours will be asked to perform simple actions to prevent the formation of blood clots.
