Learn the 7 best-kept secrets about weight loss surgery we’ve uncovered from carrying out thousands of successful procedures
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
Will you do my revision if another clinic performed the original operation?
Absolutely. Revision surgery is one of our specialties so it’s quite common for our revision patients to have received their first bariatric surgery from a different clinic. -
What are the reasons to patients opt for revisional bariatric surgery?
Typically, patients may choose to have revisional bariatric surgery for 2 reasonsThey experienced poor weight loss in the first 12 months following their surgery or weight regain in the years following their first surgery.
Complications of the original procedure. These are generally procedure-specific, e.g., ulcers for RY gastric bypass, slippage for the LAP-BAND, etc.
-
Will I need revisional surgery again in the future?
We aim to make your bariatric surgery with us your last. Afterall, Weight loss surgery is an effective tool in achieving weight loss but it’s the steps taken post surgery - developing new, long-term, healthier habits - that leads to lasting weight loss success. This is why your relationship with us doesn’t end post surgery, we’ll continue to support your bariatric journey with a host of aftercare solutions designed to cement long term weight loss results. -
Does weight regain after a bariatric operation “automatically” qualify me for revisional surgery?
Not necessarily. Regaining a small amount of weight is common following all bariatric operations. The key is to limit the amount of weight gain. If weight control becomes a problem again, you may choose to evaluate the success of your bariatric surgery and explore revision surgery. Our patient coordinators are happy to answer any questions and help you identify whether revision surgery is the best route for you. -
What is Bypass to Distal Bypass revision surgery?
A Distal Gastric Bypass is designed to treat weight regain after a Gastric Bypass. This procedure can help you to lose more weight after weight regain by reducing your ability to absorb food and calories. With this reduced absorption, patients get a second opportunity to lose up to 60% loss of their excess weight again.
As part of the procedure, the Surgeon divides the Roux-limb from the original position and connects it to the very distal part of the small intestine (roughly 300 cm from the end of the small intestine). As a result, food is only mixed with digestive juice in the last 300 cm of the small intestine, significantly decreasing the absorption of food and ultimately resetting your metabolic set-point. -
What is Sleeve to Distal Bypass revision surgery?
Gastric Sleeve revision to Distal Gastric Bypass is designed to treat weight regain after an initial gastric sleeve surgery and can help you lose weight if you’re experiencing weight regain by reducing your ability to absorb food and calories. Coupled with good aftercare practices, this revisional procedure will provide long-term, consistent weight loss success.
As part of the procedure, the Surgeon first divides the stomach in the same manner they would when performing a routine Roux & Y Gastric Bypass procedure. Then they’ll proceed to reroute part of the small intestine directly to the pouch, connecting it to the very distal part of the small intestine (about 300 cm from the end of the small intestine). As a result, food is only mixed with digestive juice in the last 300 cm of the small intestine, significantly decreasing the absorption of food and ultimately resetting your metabolic set-point.
